The Huachipa Refuge
Apart from the Kennedy Park cats, we are responsible for the Huachipa refuge, located in the northeastern district of Lurigancho, Lima. The refuge was created three years ago as an emergency measure, when massive disappearances occurred in the park (up to 70 cats disappeared in one night!). We never knew their fate and could only speculate about the culprit. This is when the group decided to relocate a large part of the cats in order to safeguard them.
A private donor offered to pay for the rent and maintenance of a 400 m2 (4300 ft2) property in Huachipa, furnished with wooden cabins with shelves and soft beds. The refuge is guarded in turn by two guardians who also take care of the cats’ feeding needs and hygiene. All of this is funded by the person who sponsors the refuge. Unfortunately, this person is currently in financial trouble. Right now GVDF’s activities barely cover the costs incurred by the cats living in the park, which is why we need to find new sponsors urgently.
If you are interested in sponsoring the new refuge, please contact us through this page. Remember that we practice transparency, and you will receive reports, bills and photos to let you know how your money was invested.

We are reaching out for help abroad since the existence of the Huachipa refuge was never made public here in Peru. It was not meant to be anything else than a sanctuary for the cats already living in the park, and we wanted to avoid people believing otherwise: it is very common that, upon learning about an animal-loving neighbor, people start leaving their unwanted litters at the door of said neighbor. The number of adult cats living at the Huachipa refuge is already high enough. At one point more than 100 cats were at the refuge, although many of them have been adopted.
In addition, the Huachipa refuge is rather far away from our center of action, which not only makes it difficult to operate but also forces us to spend a lot on transport fares. The idea is to relocate the 30 cats currently at the refuge, to a smaller and cheaper place in a district near to Miraflores (for instance in the district of Surquillo, where prices are lower than in Miraflores). We are aiming to give these cats in adoption in a maximum of 5 months time (adults cats are usually not adopted since people prefer kittens). We need sponsors for that period of time. If we are able to find sponsors ready to extend their generosity, the new refuge could be used for foster care for recovering cats, cats with gingivitis, or recently spayed female cats.
